documentary film screening with an introduction by director Josef Lustig
The film is an attempt by a father and grandfather in one person to describe to his son and grandson a not-so-distant past whose historical significance is comparable to that of biblical times. Through his personal testimony at the very sites where the events took place, the witness – a writer who survived Nazi concentration camps – seeks to convey experiences that cannot be understood through statistics alone, yet must be remembered and repeatedly brought to mind despite the unbridgeable gap between those who experienced them and those who can only hear their stories.
The film was made in cooperation with Czech Television in 2009, shortly before Arnošt Lustig departed for the “writers’ heaven.”
The programme was created in cooperation with the Arnošt Lustig Foundation as part of the AL100 project, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the author’s birth.
58 minutes, in Czech with English subtitles.
