The story of the Placzek family is one of the most remarkable chapters in the history of Moravian Jewry. It begins in Boskovice, where, thanks to Rabbi Abraham Placzek, the seat of the Moravian Chief Rabbinate was transferred in the 19th century. From there, he profoundly influenced the religious and public life of Moravia. The lives of his descendants then led from Brno to destinations across the world.
Barbora Dočkalová, author of the new publication Placzek: Rabbis, Scientists and Witnesses to History, will present the extraordinary stories of several generations of this remarkable family—from Abraham and Baruch Placzek to the world-renowned physicist Georg Placzek and their descendants, who are now rediscovering their Moravian roots.
