A theatrical production of an original play in the Wallachian dialect
BEZOPONY | Lumos | Brno
In the wild mountains near the Hungarian border lies Štítná—a poor village that has closed its eyes to the mountains surrounding it. Memories of ancient nomadic raids drum against its walls, awakening fear in its inhabitants. What lies beyond the walls? What is in the mountains? A villager answers: “Nothing, just our village and the great, dream-like Brod!” And the fear retreats back into the wild darkness all around. And what about Brod? “Brod is the ideal, the city of all dreams! In Brod, people wear beautiful masks and are rich…” Ah, Brod—the place where all wealthy lasses dream of marrying into. Has anyone ever seen Brod? “Brod is an ideal—so why see it!”
To Rozka, daughter of the powerful village magistrate (fojt), Brod means little. She senses that something other than Brod and her village lies beyond the walls. Where is that dark man from, the one who occasionally walks past the cold windowpane of her farmstead? He carries a tall staff, wears big boots, and commands his herd but little—why is he drenched? Where did he come from? Who is he?…
The window glass begins to tremble. A damp darkness shrouds the sky. A power the village has forgotten how to handle. The storm cares nothing for masks or marriage.
It has only one question: Can you survive?
