In Search of the Secrets of Jewish Tombstones - Thematic tour of the cemetery

Festival

CZK 100

Jewish tombstones (matzevot), traditionally placed on the first anniversary of a person’s death, serve not only as lasting memorials to members of the Jewish community, but also as works of art. Their design often reflects the social status, aesthetic preferences, and level of assimilation of the deceased and their families.

What meanings are hidden in the symbols and inscriptions? How can one decipher abbreviations and numbers, and why do civil and Hebrew names often differ? What do Hebrew epitaphs actually say, and what has been the historical fate of Jewish tombstones over the centuries? These questions and more will be explored during a guided tour of the Jewish cemetery in Brno, led by Hebrew language instructor and scholar of religion Kristýna Zubčáková.
